Cutting Fat without resorting to rabbit food or reading Delia Smith

There are ways you can cut down on the fat and calories without having to eat salad for every meal. We've listed our favourite hints and tips to cutting calories without even noticing!

  1. Drink plenty of water before and during every meal - it'll fill you up and help you eat smaller portions.
  2. Fill sandwiches with loads of salad and low fat meats like chicken instead of cheese, coleslaw or dressings. As even a small portion of coleslaw can amount to 100 calories, this will be a big saving.
  3. If you want to eat chips at home, try having oven chips rather than using the fryer. Even better - cut potatoes up into chunks, put on a lightly greased baking tray, drizzle a little olive oil over them and bake for about 15-20 minutes until cooked. Delicious and much lower in fat.
  4. If you are cooking mince for a Bolognese or chilli, dry fry the mince until cooked, drain the fat off, and dab with kitchen towel or wash under a hot tap in a colander. Make up for the loss of taste from the fat with plenty of tomato paste and seasonings like herbs, Bovril or Oxo.
  5. Go for low fat options when you buy foods - low fat yoghurts rather than Greek, low fat cheeses, healthy eating products.
  6. Cut down on sugar. Go for low sugar drinks like Pepsi Max or Diet Coke instead of full sugar versions. This will save you loads of calories and you will get use to the taste honest! Wean yourself off sugar in your coffee or tea - a teaspoon is 20 calories. If you have 5 cups a day at 2 teaspoons per cup, that's 200 calories a day.
  7. If you want to fill up in the evenings eat a big bowl of cereal. Try to use skimmed milk, but if you can't face that, try mixing skimmed and semi-skimmed, or just use semi-skimmed.
  8. If you want to eat salad, but can't bear it without dressing, try buying a low fat dressing and using that. Alternatively, put the salad dressing on the side of the plate and dip your fork into it rather than the salad. Sounds silly but you will get the taste with less dressing.
  9. If you are going out with your mates for a curry, pick a tandoori dish rather than a creamy curry. Have roti bread rather than naan bread and go for boiled rice instead of pilau.
  10. Drink moderately or not at all. Apart from the calories in drink, it will weaken your resolve and those fish and chips will suddenly seem irresistible.
  11. Eat plenty of vegetables. They fill you up and are healthy too. Try to stick to boiled new potatoes rather than chips and if you are cooking mashed potato, avoid the butter and full fat milk.
  12. Cook meals all together in a pan rather than frying vegetables or meat first. You can make up for the taste with other seasonings and it will be easier too!
  13. Grill rather than fry. Grilling sausages and bacon is much healthier and lower in fat and you won't notice the difference.
  14. Make an effort to get to the gym - you will be able to eat and drink more and still lose weight.
