The health and fitness industry worldwide is big business, and it continues to grow at an incredible rate. Just looking at the shelves of your local newsagent, you will see no end of magazines (male and female) devoted to articles and supplements on how to get the perfect body and how to feel 10 years younger. Turn to the business pages of your daily newspaper and you will see ever more frequent mentions of health club chains raising capital to open more and more health clubs. All this is great for the publishers of the magazines and for the owners of these chains of health clubs, but it doesn't seem so good for the general public as a whole.

Levels of obesity in Western Europe and in the USA are at a record high, and are increasing at an alarming rate. We are spending more than ever on junk food, yet our activity levels have been decreasing steadily. So somewhere along the line all the increased availability of information on healthy living and the increase in the number of health clubs is missing the mark, otherwise we'd all be fit!

The problem is, it would seem, not knowing what to do, but doing what we know. This is where a Personal Trainer comes in. We all know that we should exercise regularly, yet how many of us actually do?

A Personal Trainer can put together a structured, progressive exercise programme, tailored individually to your fitness level and your goals. He or she will be able to assess your current level of fitness, and also to help you set achievable, positive and measurable goals - wanting "to tone up a bit" sounds fine, but is rather difficult to actually measure. A trainer can translate this into meaningful information, and will be able to monitor your progress.

A good Personal Trainer will also be a first-rate motivator. If you know you have an appointment (that you've paid for!) at the gym, you're far more likely to go, and once you get there, your trainer will take care of the rest of your workout.

Finally, a Personal Trainer is also a teacher - our aim at the Personal Training Centre, and what we feel should be the aim of the health and fitness industry as a whole, is to educate and motivate our clients and the general public to understand the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle. To demystify the whole process, and to offer everyone the ability to help themselves.

Finding a good Personal Trainer is often harder than it seems - it is still a relatively new industry and many individuals have set themselves up as trainers with little or no qualification to do so. Key things to look for in a Personal Trainer are 1) a recognised and comprehensive fitness/training qualification (from someone like the American College of Sports Medicine or Premier Training), 2) an up to date first aid/CPR certificate and 3) personal liability insurance.

If in doubt, contact The Personal Training Centre on 020 7736 8787, as we have a regularly updated database of vetted and qualified Personal Trainers that will be able to train you either in the comfort of your own home, outdoors, or in our private gym.
