'Eat Fat, Lose Weight' by Ann Louise Gittleman

Well, the theory looks good. Ann Gittleman is a scientist who is one of foremost nutritionists in the USA. She claims that fats are not the enemy in the battle to lose weight, it is carbohydrates that are the enemy. In fact she claims that not only are fats important to our health and vitality, they can actually help to lose weight and keep it off.

Some of this sounds sensible. After all, we have all been eating low fat foods for years, and I don't seem to be getting any thinner through them! It's the eating plan where this book seems to go wrong. It's very difficult to follow. This is because most of the foods are American (I still haven't worked out what baked scrod is - please let me know!) and there are limited amounts of choice. Sorry, but a turkey burger with brown rice doesn't sound appetizing to me! She has tried to give alternatives, but it is still very hard to make attractive meals out of the lists. When meals do sound attractive, they seem to involve a lot of cooking and every meal would involve hunting for alternative ingredients to bok choy, acorn squash, garbanzos and marinated artichoke hearts! I found myself straying and trying instead to stick to calorie control instead. This kind of loses the impetus and after about a week, I just moved to a 1,200 calorie a day diet. I still lost 1 lb but this wasn't due to following the suggested eating plan.

The book is interesting, and is useful to get ideas about a different way of eating, but is very difficult to follow as an eating plan.
